Floor Sanding, Polishing & Restoration

At JM French Polishing we use modern equipment to achieve up to 98% dust free sanding. We're different to other floor sanding companies because we have the skill and experience to restore old floors using the same methods used to restore antiques.

Our craftsman will discuss the job in hand carefully with you first and advise on the colours and finishes available. The lacquers we use are water based, quick drying and odour free.

A Diverse Range of Skills for both Antique and Modern Floors

Recent years have seen our floor sanding service really take off. As we offer the full spectrum of wood finishes, our customers are more comfortable using one company to do all the different polishing jobs they need.

We can take on projects from an entire modern penthouse floor finish to a beautiful old oak herringbone floor (where great care and attention was needed when preparing and sanding the floor before re-polishing to its former beauty).

Parquet Flooring

Comprising two rooms and a hallway, this floor had many years of old varnish on its surface and was completely discoloured. The floor was first sanded to remove old varnish and to level the uneven surfaces. It was then re-sanded (with a Lagler Trio sander) to remove the cross-sanding marks. Last the floor was sealed to hold its natural golden colour and finished with two coats of satin Bona floor lacquer.

The client says...

Initially I planned to have the floors treated in just two bedrooms and two bathrooms, and the main bedroom, stairs and landing area carpeted. I was so impressed by the results they achieved that I cancelled my carpet order.

I have to say the results are stunning. I have no hesitation recommending their excellent and sympathetic work and the passion they have shown restoring the beautiful flooring in this old house.

Oak Floor and Painted Handrail, Belgravia, London

This oak floor was sanded using professional floor sanding machines to keep dust to a minimum. The painted handrail was stripped using a heat gun and paint stripper. Both the floor and rail were stained to colour match. The rail was traditionally hand french polished and the floor was sealed and finished with a Bona floor lacquer.

The clients say...

Many thanks for doing such a great job of restoring our floor to its former glory. It looks even better than it did when it was first laid 10 years ago.

We really appreciated your professional attention to detail and care for our home during works. You will definitely be our first stop for future polishing on our projects. Kind regards,

Andrew & Jenny Saville-Edells

Antique Georgian Oak Floor, Kennington, London

The photos below show an oak floor in a 400 year old Grade II listed building. Machine sanding was not an option here, as the age and patination needed to be considered if we were to sympathetically restore the floor. So instead, we hand sanded and stripped the floor before washing it with methalyated spirit to maintain its beautiful colour. We then sealed and coated the wood with a stain floor lacquer to give a subtle sheen.

The floor also had some old filler repairs and radiator holes. We were able to disguise these by first using a two pack filler, and then colouring to disguise the filler and to match the existing wood.

We cannot recommend Jean-Marc and his team highly enough. They carried out work to Georgian floorboards in our London terraced house with great professionalism and charm, impressive attention to detail, and were overall a pleasure to work with.
